3G Install Question

I returned the bolt-in 100 amp alternator in favor of a 3G. I got the bracket modified, and the alternator came with a wiring harness. My question is about the alternator output wiring. I know that I am supposed to run a heavy-gauge wire from the alternator output to the stud on the starter solenoid, no problem. Do I HAVE to run a wire into the bundle where the stock output wire went? What is the purpose of that? If its just for the amp gauge, I won't even bother running a wire into there, but if its needed, I'll run it in there. Thanks!

Alternatively (no pun intended), could I not just crimp a ring-terminal onto the black/orange wire and hook that up to the output stud? That is pretty heavy gauge wire.

If you do not care about the ammeter (I didn't, switched to a voltmeter), then all you need to do is run a nice heavy gauge wire from the alternator output stud to the battery side of the starter solenoid and you're done. Do reconnect the existing output wire as well. The existing wire is not big enough for the output of an upgraded alternator and may pose a fire hazard if not augmented with another.

A fuse in that line is a good option, like the wires from PA Performance have.

Thanks! I figured I could just run a heavy wire to the starter solenoid, but wanted to make sure. I'll hook up the stock output wire as well.

If I was looking to pick up some heavy gauge, fused cable, would a local auto-parts store likely have that, or should I look elsewhere (if I wanted to pick it up tonight)?
