3G install in a 86 TC

The install instructions only shows if its for a 87-88 TC. My 86 has a voltage regulator that needs to be jumpered, I read the jumper diagram for the the SVO but it shows 4 wires that need to be jumpered on the external regulator. My regulator only has 3 connectors and three wires coming out of it. I also found that the green wire that went to the alternator was not connected to anything. That may be why I never have been getting a good charge or any charge at all.

I think I need a diagram schematic and also help with this 3 wire regulator

Remove the regulator. You only need the green/red wire to the 3G alternator. And a heavy, 4 (130) or 6 (95) gauge, connection between the alternator and battery (or +12V solenoid post), fused 150 or 175 amps for the 135 or 100 amp for the 95 amp.

There are 3 poles on the 3G regulator plug.

S – connect directly to the stator plug on the 3G alternator housing, requires stator plug.

A – voltage sense, normally would connect to the white/yellow wire at the external alternator.

But since this wire runs to a splice with the main power wire (battery) from the alternator, it can be connected directly to the power out post on the alternator with a spade connector.

I – car on/running, connect light green/red wire from external regulator.(Spice them together or better, put a plug in it.

If you don't have one you can get 3G plug from a number of places.

You say to disconnect the regulator, but do I have to jumper the wires or just unplug it.

Unplug it, get the regulator out of the way, make more room for that rat's nest of wires. The only wire you need is the green/red one.

The Yellow/White wire is part of the original alternator's main power wire, so that can be removed with the alternator main power wire (Black/orange). The Orange/blue is straight to the original alternator, it can also be removed.

And while pondering this I remembered that the original alt. plug had 3 wires in it, one of which went no where, don't remember the color. Answers another question.

In checking my notes on the install, I noticed that I had put a 500 ohm, 3 watt resistor in the green/red wire to the 3G alt. I got a couple with thick leads from Digikey and soldered it into the plug I put on that wire. I remember reading somewhere that circuit could cause a regulator failure if the regulator was presented with full voltage all the time.

UPDATE. I found out that the wires were flipped in the harness. In other words someone had cut the wires and when they soldered them back together they crossed the colors.

For the external regulator all I did was unplug the harness, then crimp on some male connectors and stab them into the existing external regulator plug. Then I wrapped the plug tight with electrical tape so that they couldnt come loose.
