So im not sure what is normal with this setup with alternator case warmth. I followed the install instructions in the tech. articles. Just rechecking my work now. I have 14.2 with engine running, so its charging fine, and 12.7 engine off. I just got a new battery because my last one had a bad cell. When the key was on engine off with the old battery, the alternator case would get really hot...new battery, gets warm. But i didnt let it sit to see. Did I mess up?

I'll see if mine does that when I get home tonight. I don't think it ever gets warm, though, with just the key on. I'll get back to ya.

My alternator gets hot to the touch when car is running, even after a cold start. Everyone here told me thats normal.

HOWEVER if the alternator is hot when you turn the key to "On" position when the car is cold and not running(sitting for hours or morning start), thats an issue.

Ya I'd be worried that the alt is staying hooked up even while the key is off, effectively shorting the windings across the battery. That could fry both your alt and battery if that's the case.

I'm not that familiar with the 3G setup or how voltage regulators manage the connection of bat to alt so sorry can't really lend much fix-it advice.

I got the wiring at the voltage regulator correct, so it has to be something I did with connecting the thick yellow wire with multiple fuse links on the end of it. I'll find it

Ok, I need some clarifying help. I went through the 3g install instructions on the tech articles. When you get to the part called Connecting The Alternator Output, third paragraph down is where you need to connect the other output wires to where the original alt output wire goes to. I found the factory splice (Splice #262) which is in that ball of rubber. This splice has:

A thick Black/orange wire---alt. output wire.

A thick yellow wire---coming from Splice #261/fuse link "X" which is a 20 guage, and stops at splice #262 (Not sure of its purpose)

A thin yellow/green wire---comes from the amp meter in the instrument cluster.

I have the 10 guage wire you are to cut to length and use to connect the the amp meter wire connected to the thick yellow wire. I looked through the instructions to be sure and it dont say to connect to the yellow/green wire anywhere, just said thick yellow wire. I need to connect to the yellow/green wire insted of the thick yellow wire correct? Or am I correct with where its connected now?

Actually I believe I'm incorrect. It should be connected to the thick yellow wire. The yellow green wire is the second half of the amp gauge circuit. So it looks like I have it wired correctly. Faulty new alternator? After I finished installing it for the first time, it was working great. The alternator case was hot but apparently that is normal. What would cause the alternator case to get hot with the key on?

I'm taking the alt now to have it tested for a bad diode in the alt. Junk new parts are possible!
