300K and counting....

On the way home from work tuesday, 3/13, I watched the odometer roll 300,000. These cars will run for a long, long time if you drive them with a little maturity, and give them regular maintenance. I plan on continuing to pound the miles on it. New cars are a losing investment, where this 20 year old car is creating value, in the form of not making a monthly stroke on a car that doesn't do anything better than what I have. Consistently gets 26 mpg, and insurance is cheap.

Thought a few of the faithful would like to hear of my car's achievement.

And Amen!

My driver has about 175K on it, it's still a puppy. Runs good, just needs a new ignition switch and some cosmetic stuff. I'm being lazy on the switch Big Grin I'll probably wait until it's dead before I change it out.

I echo your sentiments exactly about new cars; while it would be real nice and fun to get myself a new Shelby Mustang, I'd hate the payments and insurance for someting that was, after all, just for fun.

Camano Island, huh? I lived on Vashon when I was a kid, I loved it and hated when we moved to Los Angeles.

Congrats on the 300K milestone!

307K here. But I rebuilt it, but that was because I wanted to go faster.

That is great! Have you done anything special during it's life like a rebuilt head or anything or is that 300k factory original miles?

That RX2 caught my eye also. My dad had one growing up, and he sold it to a guy who raced with my brother and he made it wicked fast. I bet it's fun!

Thats great. I'm getting closer to 300k also. My 84 just rolled 269,000. I agree with what you say - drive these cars right and they last forever. Mine has never needed any engine work done - and has the original turbo. Ford must hate this car because nobody ever has to buy parts for it. New car prices scare me, so guess I will keep it forever.

Gotta Love that Ford Iron. 300K on a little 4 cyl. How many other cars from the mid to late 80s can say they have that many miles.

Congrats on the Milestone & take care of that Baby..... She's just getting started!!! Big Grin

Thats awesome! Just to comment abuse and regular maintenance have a great deal to do with it. The first car i ever had 87 turbo coupe was bought new by my dad and he changed the oil every 1500miles for the first year.. then used slick 50, well that car went almost 200k and got wrecked when a drunk driver hit me. The next one i got had 80k on it and needed a new head (overheated by orig owner), thats how i got it cheap... then my next one had 95k ran it for about 2 years and during that time replaced a turbo, and replaced a head, still didnt work right so i ripped it apart and it was in BAD shape everything out of round by alot and burnt oil color on everything. Maintenance and care mean ALOT, but pretty amazing how long these cars run.
