2nd gear, sometimes 15 psi, sometimes 10

86 TC, 5 spd.

Full throttle, 2nd gear, sometimes gets 15 psi, but usually 10. Doesn't get above 10 psi in any higher gear at any RPM. I know there are some differences in this in the 87/88s but does anyone know what stock should be for 86s?

I know I could force it to 15 with a Gillis or similar but I don't want to do that yet. I want to figure out what's going on, here.

Every stock 85-86 turbocoupe or XR7 I have driven always runs more boost in 2nd than any other gear. I would assume it has to do with the load calculations and the factory boost control solnoid. The factory setup just doesnt bleed enough pressure at that gear/load.

That's my best line of BS....hahaha

Could be the cheap plastic BCS is sticking and not opening when it should to allow higher boost.

Just courious why you dont yet want to get a Gillis type valve? Cheap, easy to install, and not only does it allow you to adjust max boost, but boost comes up quicker also.

My Snap-on manual reads, 12 psi + or - 5 psi. Not much help.

Funny thing is about stock boost, my 86XR7 was a factory auto car. Only ran 8-9psi when I bought it. Terribly slow. Not anymore.

Buy the gillis valve, you will be shocked at what your missing even if you only set it to 10psi. It builds boost faster and at lower rpm than stock. Believe me if you install it you wont care to "figure out what's going on, here".
