I've never seen a Motorcraft TFI for $40. That coupled with the fact that no web site which carries the DY1284 part number has a picture of it would make me hesitant to take the chance.
On the other hand, the DY1284 part is the only TFI listed for an '88 on the 'fordparts.com' website... :dunno:

I done some researching to find some specs on the two, I found most parts stores carry both, so I'm left to assume the cheaper is not new but maybe a certified used or rebuilt part. Possibly new internals with a older housing or something along those lines.

I ordered the $40 one. It says Motorcraft so I will try it. It comes with the same guarantee. We will see.

Update us when you get it. I'm interested to see why it's so much cheaper than the other one.

I will. I would think if it is a reman that it wouldn't say Motorcraft. There is only one left on rockauto now.

Here is the $40 TFI. Came in a Motorcraft box. No indication it is a rebuild. Installed it. It wasn't my problem but here is a Pic.

Hmmm, doesn't really look like a genuine motorcraft part to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that though, my car came with what looks like a regular auto parts tfi and it runs great, no probs here.

AFAIK there is no such thing as a rebuilt TFI module, the cost to service electronics inside would be more than two or three of the more expensive modules...
I know there are automatic and std trans models, one has the ability to be push started and the other doesn't... Also there are variable dwell types but I believe those are the black, remote mount, type only...
