2 Issues To Contend With Now

A little while back I was having issues with the car bucking hard while engine temp was still cold, but then running fine once the car got to operating temp. People here gave advice as to it being maybe a bad PIP and I did run codes and got back a 14.

PS the TFI was changed w/o the PIP. So I went and purchased a NAPA reman distributor with a new PIP in it, made the swap and I am still have the issue. In my original post some said it could be the ECT, now I am still getting a code 14, do most think I should go for the ECT next or could this be a bad PIP in the new dizzy, or something else?

2nd problem, which happened today... was driving and stopped at a light and noticed my oil pressure dropping, all the way to the bottom of the red. I pulled over, checked for an oil leak and checked oil level. Oil looked a tick low, so I added, but it didn't help the oil pressure level. I drove a block and noticed while on the gas my pressure came back to, at best, 1/2 way up the gauge, but as soon as I came off the gas the pressure dropped to zero.

I drove it home, it ran fine, no check engine light, but the same results... mid pressure reading under acceleration and under steady speed it was in the red "L" and whenever stopped it was at the very bottom of the gauge.

Ran codes as soon as I got home... of course KOEO got the 14 plus got 22 and 42 all on CM. Then KOER got 17, 25, 77. It actually stalled during the 1st KOER test, probably something to do with the 17.

Any guidance/help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Ian

I would pull that distributor immediately and inspect the gear.

I can send you some info on testing the PIP/TFI with a simple volt/ohm meter. Send me an email if you want it. I did get a reman from Auto Zone that was DOA, wouldn't start so it can happen. The later one I got from NAPA was OK. I'll also send you some info on testing the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor which could be the cold running problem. They don't set a code until they are dead but can cause problems without setting a code.

On the oil gauge, take the connector on and off the sensor a few times to clean the connection. Try it again. If it still acts funny, then replace the sending sensor. Do not use tape on the threads, use teflon goop. If would be a good idea to stick a pressure gauge on there and get some actual readings before putting the new sender on.

Thanks for the replies. Car just sat for 5 hours and I started it to put it in the driveway and the oil pressure popped up right away on start up and hovered 3/4 up the gauge the whole time during warm up and parking the car - just like normal. Odd stuff, car has gremlins.

I will check the sending unit connections tomorrow and if this persists I'll change the unit and check my dizzy gears on the new unit.

Pete, I sent you an email, thanks.

I had a similar situation (gauge wise) when my voltage regulator wet the bed two weeks ago. Installed a new Motorcraft (chrome plated no less) regulator and all was back to normal.

Did you notice any of the other gauges dropping like the oil pressure gauge?

Thanks for the input guys, I replaced the oil pressure sending unit this weekend and all is good again with oil pressure reading.

1 problem down, 1 to go. lol

Good to hear. I had one sending unit go out on me EVER. It drove me nuts until I found out that it was the problem. Glad you got it fixed.
All hail Project "Marauder" !
