1988 TC Side Window Moldings Refinishing

My son and I have recently just stripped down and repainted all the Windshield, and Door frame moldings on our just over 30K original miles 1988 TC with the appropriate SEM finish.

Next target are the Side Window moldings

We are prepared to mask off the entire car to prepare them for paint again with the correct SEM paint if necessary

However prior to that my question is:

Are these Side Window moldings removable from the body structure ??

And if so how difficult, or not, a process is this ??

Anyone ever tackled this task ????

Are you talking about the Quarter window moldings? If so they are part of the window and can't be removed. Mine were in bad shape because of sun damage and I replaced with NOS. Still have two sets that need refurbishing but have not attempted yet.

Correct - "Quarter" windows- Not the Door Windows.

Well it was a guess on my part that they were possible an "assembly"- Not the best case but certainly not the worst.

So it means that we will go with the "mask the whole car" option -

Which with today's materials is not really too onerous

Just requires discipline in making certain Every inch of painted Body surface is "Air Tight"

Thanks again zbird - I will send you some shots when we have finished the repainting. Probably within the next 6 days.

Somebody posted about filling and sanding a set a long time back.
The chances of finding an NOS set are probably very slim

If you are gonna refurbish then it would be easier to remove the windows and repaint. It is very easy to remove the assy. Just remove the rear quarter trim and unbolt the windows. Use new foamcore window sealant (available from glass shop)to reinstall.

Pete and zbird:

NOS would be nice -

But these would certainly be way beyond the Father Son Project 1988 TC Budget

Will explore the removal option.

Again many thanks to you both for your input.

I got the NOS from Bartlestone glass on ebay. He also had the rubber rear window moulding for the backglass. It wasn't cheap, so I completely understand budgeting constraints!! LOL

zbird-

Interesting that you should mention the "Backglass) - do you mean Rear Window Exterior Rubber molding ??

Ours is discolored - actually Mold Spotted small "grayish" spots - and despite throwing every non-abrasive, non-caustic, Organic etc. cleaner known to man ( industrial as well as retail ) we cannot get rid of the Light Gray mold spots.

So for that bit of Trim - Given the amount of time and lack of results we have accomplished

We might be willing to "stretch" the budget. As we are looking to have a "cosmetically clean" (son's terminology) Exterior we would be willing to find out what this would cost.

Let me know approximately cost if you can

Thanks

E. J.

So IF this is same

What would you do for preperation, and filling of the orignals? Obviously mine are sundamaged (quarters) and like E.J., it is beyond my budget at the moment for NOS replacements. I have an autobody background where I might try to fix the existing window moldings.

If he has any left, I think I paid $150 for it. I had no other option as mine had split from the sun damage. I still have the old one and it looks good if it can be repaired. It split at the seam on the lower left of windshield.

Ryan50, I have two sets of quarters, one set needs refurb and one is decent. I was thinking using body putty and smoothing out then painting to match
