Just finished the head gasket and clutch on my turbo coupe and A new problem has arrived. Runs perfect at idle and just cruising , low boost its fine also. just when i floor it it misses and stumbles, i even turned down the boost to 15 and still misses when you floor i. I have brand new motor craft plugs and cap and wires. Timing is set at 14 degrees advanced. What could this be ?
Also it's a 1988. 81,000 miles 5 speed

Check fuel pressure under boost to be sure pressure increases 1:1 with boost. Stock base press is 39 psi (engine running, vac line disconnected from FPR). At 15 psi boost, FP should be 54 psi.

Run the fuel system diagnostics to pinpoint defective parts; http://turbotbird.com/techinfo/Fuel_Syst...ostics.htm
They are pretty simple and then you know whats going on before spending $$.
I'd also check the integrity and location/clamping of the two inter cooler hoses and the VAM hose on the back of the VAM
Does it start to stumble at the same boost pressure all the time?

I have to second the check the intercooler couplers idea, my bottom one (turbo to intercooler) just blew out and when I fixed it I found that it took care of the miss under full boost problem I had been chasing.

Ok update: I checked fuel pressure. Was perfect, head napa warranty out the plug wires and one of the plugs was cracked. Runs ok now. No misses. But it feels sluggish.

FWIW...when I got my TC for some reason my timing was messed with from the previous owner. It might not hurt to throw a timing light on it and check to see what its set at. Im sure if timing was set back for some weird reason that would cause a lack of power right?

Question...what caused the headgasket failure...your car isnt highmileage??
If its down on power from before the HG job..I would look into the cam timing...its real easy to be off a tooth.
The last time I did a HG on a 2.3T, back in 2004. When I got the car back running...did the same as you posted...idle perfect, low boost was fine...The solution was to disconnect the knock sensor...
Weird...

I'm curious to know also why the head gasket blew,. It's a clean car, miles are original. One of the cleanest I've seen. It just runs lousy. I have the timing advanced to 14 degrees. When I bought it the timing was retarded 6 degrees below stock setting. I believe the guy I bought it from did that to take power away from the car since the clutch started slipping immediately after I retimed the car properly and advanced it.
I'm now getting a like metal to metal (sounds like brake pads squeal) sounds like coming from the turbo but I can't tell. Really disgusted with this car now, because I was planning on driving it to Carlisle in June but its just not up for it.
