1987 TC 5 Speed - stock - WGA arm pivot broken

Does anyone know where to purchase a WGA for the IHI? I cannot find a listing.

I bought the car with 63K 6 months ago. The car never saw a winter but was never maintained either. No sign of grease on that pivot. It looks prone to rust and heat problems.

I have put 2000 miles on the car since I went through and tuned it up. The turbo was spooling to 15lbs max. I hadn't been driving the car much and I went to take it out last week and the overboost buzzer chimed in. The pivot was seized.

I treated it repeatedly with PB Blaster for a few days, and I managed to get an oxygen sensor socket over the waste gate lever. I started moving it back and forth slowly but it ended up snapping.

It appears I can get the WGA off the turbo without taking the turbo off the car, so I'm looking for a new WGA, assuming that the waste gate lever has a hole in in, and the WGA arm is what has the pivot and C clip on it.

Thanks in advance.

In the mean time I have to say the bird is pretty fun with the non-turbo four and the 5 speed.

With the WGA rod removed from the pivot arm (watch out removing the C clip, they like to fly away) does the pivot arm move freely through a 45* arc? If it's binding then it is probably junked up inside the waste gate. You may have to take it out to clean/loosen the WG.

Thanks you very much for the reply.

The waste gate arm moves freely, no issues with internals.

The pivot post that the C clip was attached to broke off the WGA arm.

I would like to purchase a new WGA, considering the current age of the original. Then I can extract the broken piece out of the waste gate pivot arm, and install and new WGA. I saw one that appeared new in a modification post, but cannot figure out where to purchase one.

Then I can keep it greased properly.

Any thoughts?

I would try contacting some of the turbo shops and see what they have aftermarket. FYI the ford versions are set for opening at 9.5 psi +/- o.5 psi

Give Charlie at Evergreen Turbo a call. They rebuild IHI's so I'm sure he could help you out on finding a wastegate actuator.
