1987 Boost Control Solenoid (BCS) Valve Strategy?

Does anyone know the LA3's stock strategy for energizing the BCS valve for 1987? I know that it should be energized whenever the fuel switch is set to premium, but is there an rpm range or boost level when the ECU energizes it? Your answer is greatly appreciated b/c it will save me from installing an LED. Yes, I know I should just install Gillis, but I want to know what I lose if I stick with my red butt splice. Wink

Don't even waste a minute thinking about the BCS. Get a gillis, it will boost earlier in the rpm range also, not like the BCS. Disconnect the hoses and keep it electrically plugged in. When you install it you will know why everyone has one!

The current BCS used in the Ecoboost engines is compatible with the connector in the Turbo Coupe, just plug it in and mount it. Whatever the LA3 dictates the new EBC will do, just like the original did. Part is available over the counter at your local Ford dealer for a very reasonable price.

Thank you Dan! Does anyone happen to know:

Gman, the original settings for boost onset and limits, will dictate when the new EBC is to activate. It will work just as the original equipment EBC would perform. The new style EBC, when installed in the Turbo Coupe, merely replaces the old.

I have no experience with the Quarter Horse, but I can set boost onset and limits with the PiMP stand alone ECU.
The beauty of the new EcoBoost style EBC, is the electronic connector. If you have a stock TC which the original EBC no longer operates, the EcoBoost part is a plug and play replacement. If you have a stand alone ECU or a piggy back on your LA3, with the capability to adjust the boost via "TunerStudio" or some other software, this will work.

That is my question, Dan. I'm interested in learning what the boost onset and limits are. The reason I want to know when the BCS is actuated is because I am planning to change out the LA3 for a megasquirt 2 (MS2). After I do that, I want to program the MS2 to actuate the BCS the same way as the LA3, if I can find out how it is supposed to work.

That is good to know. As it is so inexpensive, I may change it out, but I'm really having fun with the red butt splice.

It's not really worth trying to copy the factory boost control strategy. It's simply "on" or "off". When the solenoid is open, you get 15 lbs, when it's closed you get 10-ish. It's doesn't actually do anything to modulate boost on it's own. IIRC, the only thing is on the '87 it stays closed when you're in 1st or 2nd gear, and opens in 3rd-5th gears (in premium mode). '88 it's open in all gears (again, in premium mode). In normal mode it's always closed.

The boost control is carried out by a combination of the of the BCS, the Wastegate, and the "tee" on the compressor housing. The orifice size on the two nipples of that tee are different. The one that goes to the BCS is smaller. This is so it will only bleed off a certain about of pressure and allow the wastegate to open at 15psi. Cap the BCS side of the tee and the wastegate actuator will open around 10psi.

Thanks Brian. If I leave my red butt splice in, I get 15# all the time, much like an '88. I have no plans to run regular. Does the premium switch affect changes in ignition timing?
