I just ordered 17x9 Cobra R replicas with 235/45-17 tires and the tire shop came back and said that they recommended wheels no larger than 8.5 inches. I've seen several cars with 17x9 (and bigger) wheels. Are there any problems with this size? Any adapters/spacers needed? Thanks!

I have 17x9 just in the back , will be to wide for the front, my fronts are 17x8 . The 17x9 wheels have 275 40 17 on them . I do not see a 235 that could fit on a 9 inch wheel . you can only have so much back space on the wheels , then you will get into the tires that will rub on the inside . hope this helps ,,,,,,,,,D.Wilder

All depends on the offset and backspacing. I have 17x9's with 245/45 17's all the way around and The fronts are on the ragged edge of being too wide. I have maybe one or two mm's between the front tires and the struts, and I had to do a tiny amount of massaging of the front fender lips to eliminate rubbing. Mine fit great with no rubbing anywhere at this point, but YMMV.

I had 17x9's with 255 40 17s up front, and 17x10.5 rims out back with 275 40 17's. On a 9 inch rim I would think 235 tires are too small. At the least I would've chosen 245 series tires. As of now, I have 17x8 and 17x9 (rear) on the car, but still run the 255's up front and 275's out back. They fit fine.

IMO the 235 tires are too small for the 9" wide rims. As for the clearance issue, I'd go with a 17x8 in the front.

17x9 cobras up front with 245/45's, it's tight like B says but they fit.

Good point B. Mine are slightly different offset, 17x9 ET20. I'm pretty sure that means they are +20mm offset.
