160 thermostat

My 88 had a 160 thermostat and was wondering why the P.O. would put that low of one in? The fan comes on at 160. I'm gonna put the stock 192 back in it. Will the fan still kick on at 160? Will I have to change the fan switch? Also I noticed that at higher rpms underload and boost I can hear detonating. Is this cause because of the cooler tstat?

actually, the lower temp stat will keep then engine in cold enrichment, or at best, loop in and out of cold enrichment. this should actually lower your AFR (richen the mix) and should not cause detonation. your two issues are *likely* unrelated. i would put the 192 back in it, for many reasons. your fan switch is unrelated, and will function as normal.

what you may find is that the PO installed the T-stat because the temp gauge was reading high. TCs are known for this, its a gauge issues, not a heat issue. i would install a stand alone temp gauge to know for sure what the coolant temp really is. you may also be dealing with a faulty ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor. this does NOT feed the gauge, but rather the ECM, and this sensor plays a big part in fuel enrichment and performance.

so, in closing:
return factory stat (192)
run codes
verify coolant temp at full operating temperature
diagnose detonation (if still present)

let me know if i can help more.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to get an aftermarket gauge because the gauge in the dash is way off. It keeps going all the way up to the red but has not gotten in to the red. It just started doing this a few days ago so this is why I'm checking out the cooling system. Found out the my cap was the original and did not hold any pressure so I bought one of those ms gasket caps with the gauge in it to see what it reads. I had a problem a few weeks ago with idle and come to find out a couple plugs came loose and I plugged them back in. I was pulling to codes which were 54 and 27 I believe. After I plugged the plugs were plugged back in the CEL turned of and has been off until this morning it threw a code 54 again. Checked all plugs and all are good. What is code 54? The book that came with my Bosch scanner said VSS. I'm also wondering if the scanner I bought is the right one for my car

Some codes can be different for our car vs other models. 54 is a CM code for the ACT sensor. For more info see this page http://www.tbirdheritage.com/turbocoupe/...-Chart.php and find 54, click on the link in the right hand column. The ACT is on the back side of the lower intake. It's in this diagram; http://turbotbird.com/faqs/engine.jpg

I agree with what Jon had to say. I tried a 160 T-stat years ago and it I took it out in less than 1000 miles for the reasons Jon stated.

Code 27 relates to a VSS. See the EEC chart at the link above.

So I got the time to replace the Tstat and come to find out it was a 180 but it was in cock eyed so I still swapped it for the 192. Also I check out the ACT sensor and found that some wires came loose from where the were crimped together also the knock sensor was the same way. The black wire came undone from both of them. I noticed that 2 of the Sam black and white strip wire were going to the knock sensor but could not find the one for the ACT sensor so I hooked one black and white wire to each. Is this correct? My CELvdid not turn off after I rewired the black wires and plugged everything back in. Any help would be appreciated. Wiring diagram for both sensor

You need to "erase" the current CM codes by unplugging the code reader as the CM codes are being reported. Then drive the car and see which ones (if any) come back.
