Hi..Do you think 140k on a 88 turbo coupe is too many?..theres an 88 with 140k near here for 1500/or best....I know the 2.3 is a great engine(had one in my 87 tempo)..but im concerned about the turbo.And do u think $1500 is kinda steep..Thanks again..Mark

Sounds about right for average condition at that mileage. 140k is no big deal for these cars or engines. Should have had a couple of timing belt changes by now and as long as the oil changes have been done right...

Do you know anything about it's history?

With proper care, a turbo will last for a very long time. Proper care means regular oil changes, not boosting it way up with the oil cold, and letting the car idle for a minute or two before shutting it off after a hard run. Synthetic oils are best, IMO.

The 2.3 used in the Tempo is a totally different engine. No parts interchange, they just share the same displacement. $1500 isn't a bad price if the body is in reasonably good condition.

Just like everybody has said, and go with a poker face and play-up the "high" mileage to the seller(hopefully he doesn't "know" about these cars, or this site). Offer him a grand if your bold; 8 hun if yer bold and daring! [Image: wink.gif] I bought mine with 155,000 or so.
GOOD LUCK

Are you kidding? That engine is just broken in! I would be more concerned about the ball joints and tie rods, that is around where the suspension parts start to get loose. As far as the engine is concerned as long as the head isnt cracked everything is probably still in good shape. Fuel injector seals COULD start leaking around that mileage so check that, but that is a VERY easy fix even if they are. If its an automatic the trans could start leaking around that mileage if it is original so double check that. Another area to check would be the rear axle seals look at the backing plates for fluid leaks, they can start leaking around that mileage. These are the Biggest things to look out for. The turbo should last well into the 180,000 mile range before the bearings start to wear.
Good luck, talk him down to 900 because of the "excessivley high mileage" LOL wink wink nudge nudge.
