my aunt told me it overheated it was her car. the car is in Michigan and I'm getting it towed here to Florida. she was the only owner, I believe she got it in 1990.
I'm wondering if it could possibly be the reducer for the heater core that's making it overheat?

You could do a couple of simple cooling system things just has drain it, flush the radiator out with a garden hose, pull a heater hose and flush the heater core with the hose, put a new thermostat in it. It could be a number of things. If it were me, I would get it home and just try to get it running. Once it's running you can start trying to diagnose problems.
