Head Differences?

my 88 TC is in need of a valve job and I have a few different choices of heads to use

88 TC head that came off it
85 TC head
83 TC head

are there any differences between the 83-88 heads other than the missing intake manifold hole that needs drilled on the 83-86 heads?

I'd rather send off my extra 83 or 85 head so I can still drive the car until the head is back from the machine shop but if the 88 head is better I'll take it off and send it off instead

First you should check every head for cracks prior to any work being done. Do you know what cars they came out of? Mileage, auto or standards, maintenance? If you have a crack free one, that's your winner.

do you plan on putting a stock head back on it?  if not and you want a performance boost, you may want to talk with bo port or Steve Schlodes (Schlodes ).  both do work on these heads and know them very well.

Just going to put a stock head back on

I’d love a ported head but can’t afford the $1k+ to get it done right now.

Check for cracks, that's your first thing to do. I know you can run with cracks on the heads, like most of our heads are, but if you have them off. Might as well check them

If all the same, I would go with the 88 as it's for your year and technically a newer head and prob has an E7 cast number on it. Go with that

What kind of shape are the older heads? in. Are either of them usable or closely ( read "cheaply") made usable? Put an old one on now and start saving to redo the '88 when time and $$ allow.

both of the older heads are in about the same shape and will need valve jobs as well
