Looking to get exhaust...question about loudness

Well I am looking for a new exhaust....and well I see how everybody suggests the dynomax turbo mufflers. I understand how they are straight through mufflers..that flow better than straight pipes. My main concern with getting an exhaust is tone. I don't want my 4 cylinder to sound like an 8 cylinder at idle...then whine like a ricer at high rpm's. I am looking for a quiet exhaust that gives great performance. Is the dynomax for me?? I like how my car isn't loud...I enjoy hearing the turbo spool...I don't mind somewhat of a deeper tone...but nothing too radical.

I bought the ATR 3" downpipe (no cat) and their 3" exhuast system which included their 3" Pit Bull straight through muffler. It flows great, but it is just too loud for me. At idle it sounds like an old Ford tractor (the old 4-cylinder ones you see everywhere). At speed or at high rpms it sounds like your typical rice burner. If you are like me, none of this is acceptable. I bought this car because it is a feature packed sporty coupe and it looks good. I want it to perform at its best, but without all the noise. I found a Walker Dynomax Super Turbo in a 3" size. This is a big body muffler with 3" tubes all the way through. The noise level is very acceptable and performance does not seem to have suffered. Recently my wife was riding in the back seat while my little boy rode in the front and I even got her approval. So although you can hear it and it does have character, it does suit the car. Just my two cents.

Yea exactly...I don't want my car to be loud....I like it for the same reasons as you..but would like to make a slight sleeper out of her. All the other 18 yr olds like their car sounding like lawn mowers...not me. If I had an 8 cylinder..then yea I would love the rumble...but not on my TC. I hate how my friends '95 V6 stang(haha...yea I make fun of him all the time for it) has flowmasters...it sounds like a V8 at idle...and a Honda w/a fart-tip on it at high rpm's. I am looking for an exhaust soon...so any other suggestions are welcome.

PS Does anybody have sound clips of their exhaust??

I have a 3" dp and full 3" exhaust going to a dynomax turbo muffler and it is not really that loud compared to the 5.0 I had with flowmasters. Good performance and a nice deep rumble at idle. It would be a shame to have a great exhaust with a muffler that can't pass it with too much backpressure. [Image: smile.gif]

Go with a magna flow. It's a straight thru muffler but has a nice mellow throaty sound. Most people think I have a V-8 in my bird with the magnaflow.

I've got a 3 inch cat back (soon to be full 3in w/o cat)with a Magnaflow, and like the other 2 said, nice and throaty, not loud, and NOT like a fart can. I also had the shop weld on a 3 inch stainless turn down at the end. Looks stock, and the only way you can see how big the hole is, is to actually get down underneath and look. Stealthy and mature, but effective.

I know you guys like your Magnaflows, but the Pit Bull muffler that came with my 3" ATR system is fundementally the same. Too loud for me. Too much resonance inside the car. The 3" big body Walker Turbo muffler is just right. Low restriction, Low noise, but enough sound to let people know you got something.
