Morning,

My car has been doing this to me quite a while and it happened again last night and it is now stuck 20 miles from my house and I have to get it towed today to my mechanic.

Problem: Only happens in COLD weather

Car cranks but it is dead flat crank. I pulled a wire last night and saw it was getting spark so it leas me to believe it's fuel. It was too windy to hear if fuel pump was humming. This is intermitent problem, last time was about 4-5 weeks ago. Before that, last winter.

Need input as fast as possible, going to try to pick car up in few hours.

Jeff K., Pete I hope you got up early this morning!!

If you have spark, there is a good chance it is the fuel pump. You would need to check fuel pressure the next time this happens to verift very low or no fuel pressure. Once this is verified, you need to check to be sure the pump is geting power but not running.

Another possibility: Sticking or electrically intermittant IAC or poor electrical connection to IAC. If the IAC doesnt open, the car will not start when cold. Try to start it with about 1/4 throttle. If it starts, problem is IAC related. This happened to me last year in my 86 Tbird. Got in car to take daughter to school. Cranked and cranked, no start, no hint of starting. Jumped in the 88 TC, took daughter to school. got home, popped hood on the 86.... IAC electrical connector had come loose. Reconneced it, and car started instantly.

Also remember to check the auto shut off switch located in the trunk. It is not uncommon to have someone bump your car in a parking lot or I have even had spare parts shift around in the trunk and have the same thing happen, crank with spark but no start and then reach in and reset the switch, then it started. I should have also mentioned to see the Fuel Pump Diagnostics article on the tech articles page.

Just an update for all you out there.

Well, I had the fuel pump changed. It was what I originally thought. Car ran great, I even noticed a bit more performance and power through the gears. Good call Jeff, thank you. But a day later the car died on me while running. It has NEVER done that to be b4. I get it towed to shop (My mechanic is a great guy, he picked up bill)

Low and behold the new fuel punp isn't getting power. Turns out it was the fuel pump safety switch located in the rear quarter, somehow the connection had got loose, just enough to make it not connect.

Good call MM!!!

I know to many of you old hats, this is a no-brainer. I just thought somebody may find it useful to know, and watch out for if same problem ever arises.
