Ive got my 86 tore apart and looking at the induction system,,,,,it apears that the air intake system has some type of "flap" with wires ,,,its this some type of early mass air meter,,,,,,is itvery efficent and anyone know exactly how it works

It called a VAM - vane air meter. It's a flow meter of sorts but not Mass air. The computer calculates "load" based on the flap opening, the air temp (sensor is on the VAM, TPS position etc. (Thats the simple version) The VAM works like a variable rheostat. The EEC reads return line voltage to know the flap opening

any upgrades to change it to a mass air OR are the vam`s a fairly good system,,,,,dont know for sure,,,but they dont look that reliable,,,,,,the biggest complaint I hear from other turbo racers is that,,the cars arent very consistent

Several people have converted to MAF. VAM are limited in their rated flow capability. Some people are running blow through on VAMs

The 87-88 turbo t birds had a bigger vam, but to use u must upgrade to the same year ecm

The VAM is relocated after the turbo instead of before the turbo.

is this a better way of doing it???? also,,,whay type of computer does the 86 have,,,,Im finding all sorts of stuff for the 87 and up,,,,are the computers 2 completely different critters

87-88 and pre 87 computers are totally different. Pre 87 were 8 MHz processors and had 16K memory, 87-88 are 15 MHz, and 32K memory. Pinouts are somewhat different. EEC, injectors, and VAM must all match.

is an 86 PE computer out of an svo better than the 86 thunderbird,,,,,will it work???
