hey guys...since the original head on my 85 TC was cracked..i had to use an 88 TC head instead. (thats the one i am doing the work on) Anyway..i heard somewhere on here that the lower intake for the 85 TC head will not bolt up to the 88TC head...is this correct? If it is...thats not a problem, i have a lower intake for an 88 TC too...but can anyone help me with this??
thanks
Zach
i am using an 88 head on my 85 XR-7 with my original lower intake.the only difference i have found in the 85 and 87-88 is in the upper.which is shorter so the TB sits on the valve cover instead of having a 1 inch space but they still work
from 85.5 t/c on the intakes are the later 'square' design...the intakes might be different in that aspect if you have an early 85 engine but they should bolt up to the head...

the 87-88 t/c uppers are shorter which use a valve cover w/ a notch in it, but ive read a few people use the short intake with the tall valve cover with no issues...i think they had to make sure they used a t/b with no vac. ports on the bottom or something [Image: confused.gif]

does your car have the square intake or the inline one?

Check the bolt holes on the 88 head, and match them up to your 85 lower intake. There is a difference in one of the holes, I believe on the front, by the timing belt. I can't remember when the change occured, so just check it. If they don't match at that bolt, you will have to drill and tap the head or intake.

The height difference in the intakes is based on the upper (with shorter valve cover to clear the shorter hood profile on 87/88), so I would just use the 88 lower and keep your 85 upper, provided it is the square type.

Problem with using the 88 lower is you will lose your thermostatic fan swtich, and the knock sensor will be in a new spot, which is no big deal. You will have to install and ACT sensor in the other hole or else plug it.
