Ok, I just changed my spark plugs, rotor and cap, and wires. Ok? I read about Topic: car shuts off while driving..... thats what mine does also..i get up to 65-70 and does fine..but then shift down..it goes to 1k rpm then dies..lights still on..and all..but i have to pull over, then crank it..but it starts right up? Did I miss something? I mean did I not install something back to were its supposed to be at? Please HELP ASAP D.D hurting...
you don't say how long it runs before it dies so from the little data given I'd guess that your TFI is going bad...once it heats up it messes up...then when it cools off it works for a while...
How warm does it have to be before it does this?
How long does it have to cool off before it restarts?
its runs just fine for 20 mins then when i shift down it dies?..
Can you borrow a known good distributor or TFI module. Like RK787TC says, it sounds like a TFI module
I would run the codes first. If you don't know how this article By Jeff Korn is helpful.

Also did this condition start after you changed the components? Or did you change the parts because of this condition?

I had a similar issue with my bird, it turned out to be that I was damaging the center electrode on the new distributor cap during instalation and it was causing an interruption in the pip signal which caused a code 14 in continuous memory.

Also some after market plug wires have too much resistance in them which will cause the simular issues. so I always use Motorcraft parts.(unless I am in a bind)in my birds.
I don't think I have enough info to agree or not with the TFI. "I get up to 65-70mph and it does fine" leads me to believe the car is not giving you problems or losing power just cruising along. But I need a clearer definition of "when I shift down it dies". Does it die when your foot is on the clutch shifting, or does it die once you're in the lower gear and trying to acclerate or decelerate? If the latter, does it run fine and accelerate fine if you don't downshift and just floor it?

I would assume that if your TFI is acting up you would notice the car running bad before you get to do any shifting; so this is my confusion. If you're just cruising along fine and it dies out of nowhere that's a TFI clue.

If it ran fine until you did the tuneup then the only thing that changed is the tuneup. So the way I read your post is it runs fine until you shift, which means coming off a load into neutral, and it does start right up without any waiting (i.e. still hot) or cranking a bunch to get it to start. If this is true I have to ask what brand tuneup parts you used, and what gap you set the plugs at? As well as make sure you didn't get the cap on crooked or forgot to tighten one of the screws. BTDT.

At the surface it sounds to me like you have a problem with it staying running coming off a load. But I'm a very literal kind of guy Wink and didn't look for the other post you reference.
