Well, I finally got the car insured and back on the road today. After fixing an oil leak and topping off the oil and coolant levels, I took it for a spin around town to start setting my boost levels. I started off at 10lbs, the turbo felt fine, so i turned it up to about 15. But now when I keep it floored in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear it starts pinging (I was running 18lbs problem-free with the old turbo). I haven't touched the distributor or timing belt, so the timing shouldn't have changed at all. Maybe it's the fuel pressure (got that new kirban afpr)? The knocking from underneath the front of the valve cover has also gotten absurdly loud. Does this necessarily mean I need a valve-job, or could it be something simpler like a problem involving the cam? Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S. to Glenn - If you've got a fuel pressure guage, can you bring it to the track on nov 2nd? I can't find one anywhere and need to set my fpr. Thanks.

NEW UPDATE: car is fixed and better than ever. New mods include mildly ported TB and exhaust manifold, removed a/c system (free mod, but still), kirban adjustable fpr (at whatever the stock setting is now, but changing once i get a fuel pressure guage), and a spare ihi turbo i had laying around. 14 second 1/4 mile times, here i come
Pinging is generally due to: bad/low octane fuel, too much timing advance, too hot charge air, vacuum leak (lean a/f) or lean a/f from fuel supply problem. The knocking under the vavle cover could be a collasped lash adjuster.

Steve I have a pressure gauge if glenn cant get his. Let me know whats up, I'm off tuesday too if you want to work on it.

Pete, I am thinking the same thing. Bad gas or low octane. Dude, put in the highest octane gas you can get for your car. If you are always putting high octane gas in your bird you may want to look at your injectors.

1986 TurboCoupe 5 speed. All blacked out paint on the outside, two tone grey leather on the inside. My 86TC has 135k original miles. So far I have done the following to the car: New Black pearl paint with a clear coat, (grill, molding, and emblems also painted). No red stripes!LOL. New two core radiator, 180 degree stat, hoses. Gabriel struts up front, YST heavy duty rear shocks, and Monroe sway dampners. Brakes (front and rear). New clutch (complete). New cat. New aquaflow GTX performance tires. New windshield, and many other smaller items like master cylinder, oil sending switch, sensors, etc. The car is in the showroom, but you can get a much better look of the interior, exterior and engine here -> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view...&members=1

Roy Howard.
Yeah, I always run premium gas. The fuel level was below the E this time so i just went to the nearest gas station (texaco) and had the kid put in $10 worth of premium. Of course, kids are known to screw things up (especially when they're sniffing gas fumes all day) and he may have put in regular by mistake. I'll dry running this tank dry and going for some sunoco instead. I also removed, cleaned, reringed, and reinstalled the injectors while doing the turbo swap, so maybe i screwed somethign up in the process. I'll wait until the new fuel is in and the fp is set before tearing it all down again, though. Thanks again for the tips, Pete and Roy.

Do you still have the factory fuel pump? If it is the factory fuel pump I would bet on that being too small with the Kirban and bigger turbo. I'll make sure I have the pressure guage there.

Yeah, I've still got the factory 88 in there (unless a previous owner changed it, which I highly doubt). I already have the walbro 255 hi-pressure, but I just haven't gotten around to putting it in yet. And the turbo I swapped in was just a spare ihi I had, but maybe the 88 can't even handle the extra few pounds of boost. Thanks.

Scott had the same problem with his car. As soon as he put the Kirban and turned up the fuel pressure a little his car started to ping quicker. If you have the pump, put it in. Don't play that game with pining. I lost it and had to replace the head gasket which is a lot more work than the fuel pump.
Well, I just spent 4 hours putting in the 255 pump now and the pinging/hesitation with higher fp is completely gone. I guess the stock 88's really can't handle even mild upgrades. The installation went relatively smoothly except for the bitchass clip holding the fuel return line together. Took me about an hour to pry that off. Then I had to cut off the end of the rubber mount for the pump so i could get the filter on (i had a spare one for the TC, but it was missing that metal retaining ring). THEN the new clip for the fuel return line didnt' wanna go in, so i had to rig up a few thign peices of metal to hold it all in place. Turned a 2 hour job into a 4 hour one. All is well now, though. Thanks for all the tips on the installation procedure/parts too, guys. Later
