Does anyone have a TC 7.5" rear axle they could measure. I'm trying to find out the width, wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface for the 7.5" axle
you mean the older drum brake rear right? i can check in about 3 hours if nobody gets to it before then.
Yes, the old drum brake version.
ok from mounting surface to mounting surface i have 60 7/8 inches. thats from a late 85 tc
Thanks, that helps a lot.
FWIW, There are two different widths for the 7.5 housings in the Tbirds....

The overall wheel mounting width is the same, but the 86-88 housings are wider than the 83-85.

The 87-88 TC 8.8 housings are the same width as the 83-85 7.5s (which are the same as the Mustang).

The overall width is the same between the drum cars and the disk cars....
is the 87-88 7.5 housings (drums) the same as the mustang just with longer axles?

is a 83 continental 7.5 housing the same lenght as a mustang housing?
can i put in ranger axles to keep the five lug and disc brake set up just to make the width shorter like the mustang? the reason is i have FR500 deep dish wheels for the rear.

from what i read from chuck and turboford i think the lincoln housing is the same as the mustang.

one last thing. i can put in 8.8 axles is a 7.5 housing right? the ranger is 8.8 correct? and both are 28 spline.
is the 8.8 axle that much stronger than the 7.5?

No..the 86-88 7.5 housings are wider. The 87-88TC 8.8 housing is the same as the Mustang.

Should be. I have an early SVO 7.5 which was the same as the Lincoln, and the housing is the same, but the axles are longer.

You'll need to do something with the brakes then....

Yes. As long as the housings are the same width.
thank you very much for answering every question that i asked. most people reply and leave out the most important part of the question that was asked.

1.SO the ranger axles will work and i will almost definitly have to move the brakets and all brake hardware back like 3/4 or an 1 inch or so. is this what you mean?

2.what year ranger are the axles from?
and what side?

3.are 8.8 axles that much stronger than 7.5?

4.the 83-85 7.5 housing is the same as the mustang just with longer axles?
1. Yes, you will need to move the brakes in. I'm not certain of the "best" way to do it. They might require special brackets. I've never installed them on a Fox Mustang-width set-up.

2. '83-'92 Ranger/Bronco II Left (driver) side axle (29-5/32") from a 4cyl or 3.0L V-6 with the 7.5" rear end, or '86-'97 Aerostar RIGHT side axles (29-5/32") is what you want.

3. Are you talking about the entire assembly or just the axles themselves? the axles are the same. I'm not sure if there are any hard numbers on how much stronger the 8.8 is over the 7.5. Unless you're doing 5K clutch dumps on slicks, or find one cheap I don't see a need to replace a good working 7.5 with an 8.8 for a street car.

4. Yes, the 83-85 housings are the same as the Mustangs...just longer axles.
