I was wondering when they list the topspeed of the 87-88 tc as 142 mph was that where the motor ran out of power or was it out of gear? I have had mine at 5100 rpm in fifth gear so i was just trying to figure out about how fast that is. The other thing is mine has 225/60-15s instead of 16s
Check your email. I sent you the speed calculators that (Mike) Walsted scripted. We will try to get them posted on the site soon.

The 142 mph was achieved by one of the magazines, testing a TC back in the day. It was limited by power, not by gear
well, actually, im pretty sure a stock tc will only go 142 based on revs, 5th ratio, and rear gear. i.e.-5900 in a 5spd in 5th is 143...but im not 100% on that...ive seen 140 in mine, and that was 5300 in 5th, but an auto rear...

The quoted top speed of 142-143 mph for a stock 87-88 is air drag limited. Gearing wise, a 5 speed 87-88 has a theoretical top speed in the mid 160 mph range.

Jeff,

Were the computers advanced enough in the 87-88 time frame to limit speed by limiting fuel delivery?
Dan, The rev limit is activated by fuel shutoff controlled by the EEC
That's pretty much what I was thinking Pete. EEC equipped vehicles today are usually programmed to a specific value (speed or rpm), thereby limiting top speed. Changing the rear end ratio to a numerically lower gear (3.00 vs. 3.55) would trick the computer and allow higher speed, but the car would be a dog from a standing start.
While talking top speed....
is anyone familar with Rick Byrnes and his merk?

I'd like to eclipse the 200mph barrier one day, and do it in a turbo coupe. Anyone else ever dream or consider things like that? Or anyone have an idea what hp it takes to run 200mph? I know the 2000 cobra r did it with around 385 ponies.

Good reading and it outlines what he had to do to make 200+ MPH!
