Full Version: Bigger Tires Ques?

Hey all,

Looking at tires to get by the end of the summer. I was thinking of going with 235/50 or 245/50 on the stock rims.

My questions are:

1. Will the increase in tire width significantly decrease my traction in the winter?

2. Will the increase in width and lower center of gravity significantly affect handling?

3. Will the different tire sizes affect gas mileage/speedometer?

4. If my math is correct, the drop will be 10mm...which is .4" will this be noticeable? I've heard some people say that the tires now look small in the wheel well. Any input on that?

Sorry for all the questions. Really curious about this (:
Thanks for anyone who read all the way! (:

P.s. Just saw Continental ContiExtreme's in 245/50/16 for $88 per tire. Seems like they are the perfect combination, especially with light snow traction!

1. Yes, nagatively, but how much probably will depend on the type of tire you get.

2. Yes, positively

3. Probably no on the gas mileage, yes on the speedometer by 2.5 to maybe 4 mph

4. the 245x50x 16 I just put on are sized at 0.9" smaller diameter than the stock tire.

I think they look great.
Thanks Pete. With enough input like that...

I think I might try some continental contiextremes at 245/50/16. The lost traction(in snow) should be made up with the quality of the tire, I hope. And you can't beat that lowered look with a fat tire (:

I have a chance to get some tires, size 255 50 16. This tire is closer in diameter to the stock 225's but it's hella wide! Will this tire fit on the stock snowflakes & will it clear the front & rear? Will it stick out too far if it does fit?
The wider the tire is,the more it will suck in the snow.It will try to push the snow down and ride up on it like a ski = bad.The wider tire will handle better on dry pavement, but it will be more subject to hydroplaning. If your over-all diameter decreases,it will infact throw off your speedometer, but it will read faster than you are actually going,so you may actually be under the limit now and then.245's on a 7" wide wheel is REALLY pushing it.It will go,but it's not good.255 is out of the question.A 235 will fill a 7 nicely, and SHOULD be the widest tire on it.

Too much fun, what's that mean? That's like too much boost, there's no such thing.
Hey Pete,

How are your tires working so far? I'm now debating on whether or not to put on 245 or 235 (:

-Joe
I just installed 235/55/16's on my TC and think there are about as big as I'd like to go.

Being that I went from the stock 225/50's to a 235/55 I went wider by 10mm but the aspect ratio went from 50 to 55 so the overall diameter only went down a small amount.

The next wider size would be 245/50's but I think that would be on the very outside edge of the stock rims. Pete just put these on but he's in the Bahamas for his son's wedding and hasn't put many miles on them yet...

I have 245/50/16's on mine. I have had them for about 6 months. My steering is more reactive now. You can hear the road more. As for snow, i think it might be all in the tread.. My tc sucks in snow all together. I don;t think my tires bugg out real bad.

Ok...So it looks like several people have put 245/50's on their car with ok results ( except one person's tendency to get caught in ruts )...

So what is the danger in putting 245's on? Cause now it looks like 235/50's is the way to go...

I have been told that with the wider tires you can hydroplane easier........i haven;t found that out yet, and i hope i don't
