Hey, wanting to replace a worn-out muffler with a straight-thru Dynomax Ultra-flo. From what I gather, many are opting for the 2.5" diameter offset/offset 17222 model. Would this fit into the stock setup? Just want to make sure 2.5" would work due to the fact that my measurement was closer to 2.25". Maybe I didn't get a good read? In other words, what is the stock exhaust diameter? Did a search for "stock Turbo-Coupe exhaust diameter," but had no luck for some reason. Car is a 1986 model. Thanks!
It will be much better in the long run to either replace, as in "upgrade", the entire exhaust system when you can and if that is not feasible now, then patch what you have as cheap as possible and start planning for the upgrade. Improving the whole exhaust system, manifold to tail pipe tips is probably the one biggest thing you can do to improve performance now and get the most out of any other mods down the road. http://turbotbird.com/techinfo/Mods/Mods01.htm

The stock system is more like 2.25" at the mufflers and tapers down to 1 & 7/8" after the mufflers

The stock exhaust system is pathetic. As Pete said, patch it for now until you can afford a complete turbo to rear of the car large diameter system. Check out Stinger Performance for good systems at a reasonable price.
Stinger ROCKS....Just bought his complete system for my 88 and it made a noticeable difference. I went 3" from the turbo with dual 2.5" mufflers and tails. His is all mandrel bent and is the real deal.
I appreciate the responses, thanks guys! Even though there are obvious performance gains with an entire system upgrade, I am wanting to keep the car as original as possible. The muffler has been patched already, just wanting a suitable replacement. It sounds as if the 2.25" 17226 model will fit?

I will attest that Birdjunkie's Stinger system sounds about as good as one could imagine any (otherwise stock for now) 4 cylinder engine could sound! So good, I'm getting one of my birds the same treatment by the same installer in the near future!
On my Bluebird, the first generation exhaust replacement (in aboot 1994) was a custom stainless system behind the cat with straight throughs - sadly, of stock diameter (Dad wasn't into Horsepower upgrades for his daily driver, he just wanted to never have to replace the system again, and so far it's been 22 years running!).
There's a few TC's out there that just sound so optimal, but all are upgraded diameter systems - let it flow, man! You'll smile when you put the beach towels in the trunk while it's running! and then the smile will widen as the throttle eases you a bit further back in your seat!
Dynomax Ultra-Flo 17222 installed on 6.3.16; sounds great! Car is actually quieter now because it had an exhaust leak. It has a deeper tone and sounds smoother. Will post a video when the weather is nicer. I kept the rest of the system stock.
I'm going to be installing a 3" downpipe with no cat and a single muffler exiting to the passenger side. The Dynomax is my first choice when I do mine.

I recently purchased an 88 TC. It has no exhaust system, It only had the stock catalytic converter. I see recommendations above to remove the stock stuff. What is the stock setup, dual exhaust, with 2 mufflers? Thanks in advance.
