hi guys, been on the site since 2001 when i bought my car, coulnt remember user name and password. anyways, my car has been sitting for bout 6 months, went to start it other then battery dead it started and ran fine. ran for 5 mins or so then i plugged the radio back in, it worked still ran fine. then i hooked up my air/fuel gauge to the o2 sensor. it ran fine for nother min or two then it died. now it wont start, and the radio wont turn on. i unplugged the air/fuel gauge and the radio, still no start. it turns over fine, its getting fuel. it is almost backfiring, sounds like its trying to start but not firing right. ive checked the timing belt and its turning fine, as well as the rotor inside the dissy. just last year i changed the timing belt tensoner, dizzy and the tfi. if i had to guess id say its timing related but i dont know how anything would have changed. only other idea is something electrical but not sure where to start. sorry for the long post but trying to get everything in there, thanks in advance for all the help
where did you tap into the engine wiring harness for your air /fuel gauge ? sounds like you might have a wiring problem, since everything was fine until you removed the gauge.
Sounds to me like the timing belt jumped a tooth or two.
Have you pullet the cover and checked to see that the timing marks are lined up and that the rotor is pointing to the correct bolt head?
i spliced right into the wire as it comes out of the 02 sensor. im going out now to check if the timing marks line up. i dont know why it would have jumped, its a new belt new tensioner and i wasnt revving it or anything when it died.
Any chance you forgot to tighten up the tensioner bolt? (I have...)
just checked. when the upper marker is lined up to the middle mark, the bottom mark on the crank is one or two marks above tdc. does this mean it jumped a tooth or two? and yes the bolts were tight i just checked them
update. i redid the cam timing and it still wouldnt start. so i pulled the dizzy. about 4 gears of the dizzy gear are broke off. what could cause this, should i look for any other problems before i put a new dizzy in it?
There are several theories as to why this happens. Mismatched dizzy/aux. shaft gears, modern oils with low Zinc content, not enough oil flow to the gears, etc.

To fix it, and be confident that it will stay fixed, you will need to drop the oil pan and clean out all the bits and pieces that are now in there. You're also going to need a new auxiliary shaft. I wrote a big long post about it when I went through this. It may give you a good idea of what you're in for. See below:

Not cleaning the pieces out of the engine is not an option. Failure to do it well will result in the same thing happening again. There are lots of past post about this repeating cycle.
where do i find an axu shaft?
