My 88 will turn over and die immediately. Try again, will turm over and spit and sounds like not getting fuel, tries to keep running, buit dies. Finally, it will start, and stay running, but is still spitting. Have to rev up for a minute or two, then can drive, but it bucks like a bronco. Not a problem attaining speed. Just jerks like it has epilepsy. Will smooth out after engine starts to warm up, runs like a scalded dog, then after a long drive of higher speed, will start to spit a little. Flooring it of changing gears usually helps. no problems at restart if it sits for awhile. Don't think it's injectors, don't smell gas, not really using too much, either. Can hear fuel pump. Not using oil, radiator not leaking. PIP replaced with new motor 2 yrs. ago. Help!
Hey another Tar Heel...

Just a couple of thoughts off the top of my head...but it could be one of several things...

Have you checked the Codes ?

I would say it's possible it's the TFI or PIP

Have you checked the base ignition timing (spout out) lately ?

Edit: I also forgot to add, that sometimes a simple cause is corrosion on the contacts in the dist. cap....
Mine was doing the same thing. Start, run like shit for 10 seconds....stall. Start again rough for a few seconds and then fine. Occasionally would idle high (1800) but finally just shut off while running. Timing belt still intact, getting fuel, haven't checked spark yet but got a new tfi due to the fact I have never replaced it. I'll let ya know if it helps.
Dan, my boyfriend actually suggested there might be a crack in the dist cap and humid air condensing inside. Dries out when engine creates enough heat and that fixes problem. Maybe. The other day I had driven for about 15 miles and when I turned it off I heard a sort of grinding and then a bunping noise from the trunk area. Well theee's nobody or deer in the trunk, so it has to be fuel pump. Walked to the back and could smell gas. Think I mignt have the answer. Got to take it to my guy and have him test. Will be my luck it will read fine. Probably will replace anyway. Thanks for your input!
