So an older man that works with me is a well known mechanic in my town. In fact he owned his own shop for years. Well see, this man was telling me earlier that if you put 2 oz of acetone per 10 gallons of gas in your gas tank, you'll increase your MPG by 25%.

I know, I don't believe it either. He says he read it in a well known farming magazine, I forgot the name. Also, he's had friends attest to it.

So I guess I'm just wondering if you guys had heard of this. The only way I can see it helping--if at all--is by cleaning deposits out of the fuel system. Aren't injector cleaners mostly acetone anyway?

On a side note... his buddy that accomplished said results with this method mentioned that fingernail polish remover used to be a $1 at WalMart. Since he, and WalMart evidently, had discovered the potential of this mostly acetone product, the price has doubled to $2. Big Grin COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT! :p
I tried it three years ago in the 4.6 Grand Marquis on a trip... Improvement??? Exactly ZIP...
Total BS. Often, people will drive easier after trying one of these "gas saving tricks", which results in improved MPG.
this was also tested on myth busters. The acetone actually lower MPGs slightly
I thought it sounded familiar! I remember that epidose now. Did you see how they got that diesel to run off straight cooking grease? I think it was a different episode, but still. Very cool.
Episode would be the word of choice.

We'll leave the "epidose" for those with allergic reactions... Wink
