I have seen several black cars with tinted tail lights. What do they use for this? Is it legal? Is it easy to clean?
you can use a spray tint i think its called hvtConfused or vht or something lol

i believe part source carries it.
VHT makes it, though if your not good at spray painting it would be best to have someone else do it that.

Your going to want to start with 1 coat, let dry and check then repeat till you get a nice dark tint. The hard part is figuring out wether you've added to much, legally(at least were I live) drivers have to see your lights come on 500 feet away, all though when it comes to California its best to ask a shop that does that kind of stuff.

Last thing you want is at night for someone to not see your tail lights and thunk, then find out from the cop that tinting your lights is illegal....
I would never use vht light tinting or anything else like it everytime ive seen it used it either makes the light look cracked cause it was put on too thick or becomes cloudy over time.

That being said the best way to tint a light i have found is wat we did on my brothers scion took your standard auto clear (We used some dupont we had laying around) and add some black paint to it we actually had to add a little bit tryed a few drops and it was just beyond clear still lol. Then you just spray them like you would anything else on the car then buff them out to a glossy shine.I can get some pics of my brothers tail lights if ya wanna see how clear and black paint looks they match the color of his black scion when off and you can see them perfectly when on.They have been on his car for over 4 years and still look awesome.
As for being legal where you are i dunno but here its perfectly legal.

Heres a couple pics they are dirty but they still clean up nice just by washing them like you would the car.

It is not legal. Lights and brake parts all must be Federal DOT approved. They must meet standards.
The way I look at it is with as poor as most people are at driving, you need to not make your lights less visible.
It is legal in the state of missouri and the one on my brothers scion are just as visible now as they where when they werent tinted. Im prolly gunna tint the ones on my TC too once i get a chance which hopfully will be when i get the driftcar finished.
Legal in Missouri? Well, maybe...

Taillamps, reflectors--violations, penalty.

307.075. 1. Every motor vehicle and every motor-drawn vehicle shall be equipped with at least two rear lamps, not less than fifteen inches or more than seventy-two inches above the ground upon which the vehicle stands, which when lighted will exhibit a red light plainly visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear.

3. Every new passenger car, new commercial motor vehicle, motor-drawn vehicle and omnibus with a capacity of more than six passengers registered in this state after January 1, 1966, when operated on a highway, shall also carry at the rear at least two approved red reflectors, at least one at each side, so designed, mounted on the vehicle and maintained as to be visible during the times when lighted lamps are required from all distances within five hundred to fifty feet from such vehicle when directly in front of a motor vehicle displaying lawful undimmed headlamps.

Still, the way you did them looks nice!

Shiny Side Up!
Bill
see wat i see when i read that is they are required when Lighted lamps are required so really they dont have to be red during the day by wat that says.

Man i wish that first part was true in missouri about the 72 inchs from the ground i couldnt get that lucky lol we dont go by lights on lifted vehicles we go by the bottom of the bumper which is supposed to be 36" as thats wat i was told by the highway patrol an my 85 chevy is barley under the legal limit too it sucks. If we went by the lights here id just put my tail lights in the bumper and the headlights too and slap some 52" tires on it LOL.
VHT Niteshades.

Scuff with a scotchbright before, and after you get it dark enough scuff again and clear the hell out of it. I used a full half can of automotive clearcoat per side and I think it turned out pretty good:

They turned out a bit darker than I wanted, but you can still see them in direct sunlight when they are lit up. Especially at the average drivers height when in a car.
