Hello everyone,

I ran some tests on the TC tonight and have results. Basically, I think everything looks OK, but I ws just wanting to know if anyone has any opinions.

Test 1: Vacuum
18.5-19 in.HG at idle
(according to a search, this is at the bottom end of the acceptable range)

Test 2: Timing
10 deg BTDC w/spout out nd engine warm. With spout in under same conditions, timing goes to 25 deg BTDC. Revving engine to 5K with spout in, timing goes well over 35 BTDC.
(??)

Test 3: Fuel Pressure
32 PSI at idle
30 PSI at key off... pressure stays steady for over 3 mins. Drops to 27 PSI at 8 mins, 22 PSI at 23 mins.
(I didn't read the tech article. This info looks useless- will re-run the test using the diagnostic article)

Test 4: Compression
Cyl 1- 150 PSI
Cyl 2- 145 PSI
Cyl 3- 160 PSI
Cyl 4- 160 PSI

I would test FP with boost to see if I have a 1:1, but there is no way to see my FP gauge through my windshield Big Grin

Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks,
James
duck tape lol
The FP tester just isn't long enough- when the hood closes, it would break the gauge Big Grin

Wasn't cheap, either (not too expensive though) at $50

James
I added a short (3-4") extension o my fuel gauge so I could just snake it under a wiper blade.

If I had to do it over, I'd use a longer extension - 6-7" It's standard prethreaded tubing (pipe thread) from the plumbing dept at Sears or any home improvement type store

Your vacuum is OK. 4 cylinders tend to run toward the bottom half of the scale.

Timing looks normal but try 12-13* for better throttle response, if you run premium

Read the fuel system diagnostics. You idle pressure is low.

Compression is good.
Thanks Pete. I have the exact same FP gauge, so that's an "easy fix"! Wow- my first Big Grin

Yep, I only run premium (91 Octane), so I'll try bumping the timing 2-3 degrees to see what I get.

Oh, by the way, when I tested my compression I pulled out Bosch Platinum plugs that were WHITE on the ground electrode. Wrong plugs, obviously, which will be changed today.

Thanks again,

James
i currently have the stock MC replacements, but you can't run platinums in these cars?
Some say they don't work well in our turbo 4s and some say they are fine. I had them in my 88TC when I got it and ran them for 2 years with no problems and the car ran good. I put some NGKs in and to be honest I cannot tell the difference in performnce or gas milage.

I've used Autolite plats for a short time with no problems. I've heard it argued both ways.
cool.....i prefur motorcraft. They make plats and iridums now. I think you gotta order the iridums from FRPP tho....wonder how those would work?
