Has anyone actually fixed the gauges by replacing the voltage regulator with a factory part? Does the replacement last? Hate to go through all the bother and have it not work or last.

People have done it. Last I heard it was around $30. I haven't done it so I don't know how long it may? last

I tried using the replacement from NAPA ($26). I percieved the guages as reading on the low side with a slight bit of wandering still, whereas the original IVR read high often and wandered considerably more. I then converted my original IVR to solid state using the method in the Tech. Articles. It now reads what I percieve as a little low but very steady, though they are very slow to respond to changes.
I changed mime last summer with a Ford OE regulator. I don't remember the cost. It seems to be on the low side of what I think it should read. Just this weekend the gas gauge is reading 3/4 tank when full. Guess I'll be doing the solid state thing soon.

Just wanted to revive this old thread to hopefully help others as Jeff K has me. I had wavering guages so I pulled an IVR out of an 84 Cougar in the local junkyard. Was excited, put it in, then disappointed. It read very low but was steady. I asked Jeff if he could build a solid state adjustable IVR and he said that the factory ones were adjustable. He was right. There is a little metal post next to one of the terminals on the white plastic side. If you turn this clockwise, it raises the guage readings, counterclockwise lowers. Mine was reading just about the lower white mark on oil press/water temp and I turned it CW two full turns. Now it's perfect. If you all still have low reading guages, try this! Thanks Jeff!

Also, if you want him to build you an SSIVR, he said next build dates will be early summer (if there's interest) because he is sold out right now and busy.
