The '83 turbo coupe has a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure external pump. Has anyone made a conversion to a single high pressure pump in the tank (like the '85-'88) using the Walboro 255 pump? Or does the double pump system perform better than the single?
People have done the conversion, placing the one pump in the tank and plumbing around the external pump. A single 255HP will supply all the fuel you need.
Thanks for the info Pete. Fuel supply has not been a problem unless the filter gets dirty but just planning to replace the older pumps before they might fail. Current HP is about 240 at the wheels and not planning on anything more. I've got the electrical diagrams for the '85 plus but not the '83 but assume both pumps are powered by the same relay. I'll check the gauge of the wires going to the pump in the tank as the Walbro may be higher wattage and could upgrade if needed. I've also got '85/86 parts car if I might need something.
Good morning gentelman. The dual pump setup is similar to the SVO setup. It can supply fuel equal or greater than a 255. The 2 pump system is very desirable for fuel supply. With that said as Peter points out so correctly a single 255 will supply all the fuel you need. Its a little tricky to by-pass the fuel line past the frame mounted pump. You will need to be a little creative with the fuel line. Now the SVO has a dropping resistor circuit on the frame pump. I am not shure about the TC. If necessary i can pull a print from ALL-DATA. Once again the dual pump system can produce as much or even more fuel than a single 255. The 2 pump system is a very good fuel supply system and you may want to think about keeping it. Have a good morning Gentelman
Paulie, thanks for the excellant info. I did not know if the performance of the dual pump system was good or marginal. Info about the later model single pump seems it's marginal. I have not pulled the tank yet. Everything is still original '83 factory parts but corrosion in the tank is a current problem so was considering how much to upgrade. Only about 45,000 miles but age takes a toll. Maybe the tank and new low pressure pump in the tank would be a good thing to do.
My pleasure Sir. That 2 pump system was used by several foreign cars including SAAB. It was also used on the oldsmobile powered CADILLAC. The system is very well designed and can flow very respectful Numbers. Have a good evening Sir
Yes, I have '77 and '78 Cadillac Seville and they have a dual pump system. This was fairly early for multi port fuel injection on a production car in the United States.

Thank You SIR i could not remember the name of the CADDY. You just saved me from pounding my brains out trying to remember. Thank You Sir
I guess I never knew that the dual pump setup was so respectable, which leads me to a question. Does anyone know much about the high pressure or low pressure pumps? I.e. what would be a suitable replacement should either fail, I hate trusting the cheapo parts store "OEM quality" replacements. The fuel system has been in the back of my mind on my TC since it hasn't yet been a problem.

My 84 also has an inline fuel pulse dampener just before the fuel rail, and the original FPR. Any other unique traits of the 83/84 regarding those two items? Would a decent AFPR be the only fuel upgrade that the 83/84 dual-pump setup might need?

I don't think I've ever seen this discussed here before, it's always talk about how weak the stock 85+ fuel systems are. I love finding out new 83/84 TC info :-)
Here is an old post on a two pump replacement. Not a lot of specific info though. See remarks by turbot4
