im going to take my upper and lower off this weekend for cleaning and painting... first off, what can i soak them in to get them CLEAN inside and out.. and then, what kinda paint do i want to use? tips
Carb cleaner
For paint you can use rattle can engine paint, Duplicolor makes a natural aluminum color that looks good. Make sure the castings are really clean before painting by using lacquer thinner or some other surface prep solution. If you don't use primer on the aluminum any paint you put on is eventually going to flake off but I'm talking at least a couple of years here.
Take them to the car wash and blast em, then soak them in carb cleaner to get rid of any impurities. They will become super clean, you almost won't want to paint them. Wink

I painted my transmission with the Dupli-Color high temp engine enamel in the aluminum color DonH mentioned, it made the tranny look brand new (in fact, a few of my friends said "whoa, how much did that cost?!) Smile
so take them off, take them to the car wash and blast them.. take home and soak them in carb cleaner... then if needing painting, use dupli-color natural aluminum engine paint :-)
I'd soak them in carb cleaner first, then the car wash. The carb cleaner will leave a film that you don't want for painting
Here's an old recipe from Ryan from earlier this year I'll never forget. I don't have the guts to try it though Big Grin

I bought a metal tub yesterday from the hardware store and let the intakes and head soak in a mix of 1 part NAPA carb cleaner to 1 part acetone to 1 part gasoline.. I sanded the gasket surfaces down with 180 grit paper then 400 grit paper before soaking them. Not a cheap mix but the stuff looks like new
