I was changing the oil on both cars today and checked a few things while under there. I wanted to see which transmissions were in each car, since the Cougar speedo is off, and the TC has a 7 tooth driven gear. It turns out that the transmissions in both cars have a 1352-114 transmission label. This surprised me, since paint markings on the tranny pan on the TC said "87 Must." and I had guesstimated the difference between RPMs in 4th and 5th at the same speed to be around 83%.
The Cougar has a 17 tooth speedo gear, but the speedometer reads way off, like there was actually a seven tooth drive gear instead of a six tooth in there. (I didn't check the color of the drive gear; it was real hard to see with the cat in the way.) I figured it should have a sixteen tooth driven with a six tooth drive gear, but the error is a lot greater and in the other direction than the difference between a sixteen and seventeen tooth gear.
Is it common for the 85/86 TC/XR7 T-5's to have the seven tooth drive gear? Or is the gear swap common during repairs?
Thanks,
