Well this is my first post. Guess that makes me a noobie. Anyway I am Dan I have a 85 TC project and I am from Dover Ar. Thanks for letting join your site. Hopefully I can contribute and take someting away from the site.
Now for the question, as stated above I have an 85 TC. Its gas tank is trash so I need a new one. I found a new 87 tank locally, so the question is will it fit? What are the differences?
Should go in with no problem. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Hey Dan nice to have another member here. I also think that they are the same tank. I will tell to make sure you use the correct sender for the car. That way the gas gauge should still work right. Also note that they might be the same resistence. You should be able to find that info on the sender unit. I think the 85 has the single pump setup, but there is always the chance that they used left over 84 twin pump setup also. I'm not sure if the twin pump sender is the same as the single pump but I'm sure someone here knows.
I think all 87 tanks (TC or not) hold more than the 85/86 TC tanks. 22 vs 18 gals, if I recall correctly. Don't know if that makes a difference about fitting, though.

While the tank is off, you may want to consider getting a 250lph hp fuel pump if you plan on doing any upgrades. The stock pump barely makes it new, and age doesn't help. If you stomp it too much with the stock pump, you risk running real lean and blowing a head gasket or something like that.

Hope this helps.
I already have a new 255 lph pump and an adjustable regulator to go on the car with a host of other parts. The stock tank is dented bad and has the cracks patched with silicon. I will get the 87 tank this week and will post back here with the results.

Dan
I'll be pulling the tank out of my '86 parts car this week - I am keeping the 255 fuel pump that's in it but if you're interested in the tank itself and it's in good shape I'll sell it to you.
Actually, wasn't the 87 TC only fitted with an 18 gallon tank? The 3.8 and the 5.0 had the 22 gal tank.

Yeah, just checked the owner's manual. Says the 2.3 has the 18.2 gal tank, and the 3.8 and 5.0 have 22.1 gallons.

Not sure whether that means the 86 will swap in, but if the 86 has an 18 gal tank, chances are it's the same.
I have an '87 TC and an '88. I have put 20 gallons in each of them for a fill-up at one point or another so I'm guessing they are both 22 gal tanks. I put 18.6 in the '87 last night (for 31.6 mpg).

Huh... Odd. Ah well.
My '87 also held over 20 gallons. I used to run it until it was on fumes (replacing 2 fuel pumps caused me to change habits). I think the most I squeezed in was 21.3 gallons.
