Full Version: 88 Turbo Coupe stock boost?

I can't find a definite answer to this anywhere through searching. I got my 88 turbo coupe running today, doesn't seem to be boosting much. About 9 psi is all I'm seeing. Car is a 5-speed, i thought they were suppose to be more about 14 or 15? Thanks for any input!
9 PSI is all you get on the regular switch setting. On the Premium setting you get 15 PSI in 1st and 2nd and then again after 4000 RPM in 3-5.

Check the fuel switch setting, it's probably on regular.
Later 88 had 15psi in all gears over 4K RPM. Just a minor LA3 programming change.

If switch is in Premium and still 9 max, the BCS (which most of us get rid of and use aftermarket boost control) is likely not functioning.

9 PSI in premium setting also. It also spark knocks a little in premium setting too, but not in regular. Previous owner told me he only runs premium fuel. Is the BCS a cheap or easy fix? I'm not going to go aftermarket boost control, just want factory settings.
The stock BCS is cheap plastic which get brittle/cracks. They are obsolete so used is all you are going top find. It the round thing with 2 vac lines and an electrical connector on the passenger side inner fender

Well that sucks about the used thing. No idea where to find one at then.... any way to tell if its bad or bypass it or something?
Just bypass it, get an aftermarket boost controller for $40(if that) and set it to factory boost level.

And when you get the itch, (which you will), turn it up a lil higher.

I'm guessing there is no way to bypass it without an aftermarket boost controller, even for stock boost level? I would rather not go this route, but if thats my only option then where do you suggest getting one at?

You can't get rid of the stock Boost Control Solenoid without replacing it with another boost controller, be it manual or other.

If you want stock level boost, you HAVE to use a boost controller.

Removing or bypassing the BCS will give you uncontrolled boost levels that will destroy your turbo and hopefully not your engine.

Go with the Gillis valve. It builds boost faster than the BCS allowing faster spoolup of the turbo. You won't be disapointed.
