Hello kids, I just have a question. I was wondering how hard it is to swap a 5 speed into an automatic TC? I saw one a few miles down the road but it has an automatic and I want a manual. The price is pretty good so I'd hate to pass it by. Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I was wondering if there might be something. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I just completed the changeover to a 5-speed. Search all the sites (here, turboford, etc) and print out their versions. They all help. The main problem I ran into (using a complete 5-speed parts car) was having to modify the auto wiring harness at the transmission to jumper out the auto's neutral switch wiring.
Get a copy of the wiring diagrams for these connections.
The transmission cross-brace mount and driveshafts are specific to the transmission. You must have a 5-speed trans mount and driveshaft.
The other watchout would be for the clutch. 87-88 use a hydralic system, earlier cars used a cable system.

88 turbocoupe, 3 in exhaust/high flow cat/Dynomax muffler to 2 1/2 in pipes, manual boost controller, 9 in K&N in front of radiator,
BPV, auto to 5 spd.
I think I'm going to look at the car on Wednesday on my day off. It's an '88 and it looks to be pretty clean. I didn't see the mileage or anything so hopefully I'll find that out.
2 things I think are vague, and hard to come by unless you have the right search string (IMHO)
Transmission tunnel cover: get the one from the automatic out, and put the one from the 5 speed in if you have a donor car. Mine came with the set I bought (thanks a bunch Hawk!) or I never would have known. You have to cut the tunnel cover otherwise, the 5 speed sits farther back. You'll see the screws if you pull the carpet back and at the tunnel. Silicone the 5 speed one back in and screw it down.
Wiring: Get the wiring for the 5 speed. The opposite end of the tranny connectors is a connector under the dash behind the radio. Follow the wires from the rubber plug in the tunnel to that. The 5 speed wiring harness connects right in the same connector...no splicing needed. Also, if you want clutch interlock, get on the drivers floor and look up. You'll see 2 green wires going into a connector with a loop plugged in, I think it was behind the radio also. Remove loop, and route that to your clutch switch. Voila. I left it disconnected.
Well, I didn't see the car sitting out when I drove by the house so my only assumption is that it sold. Oh well, guess I'll have to keep on looking.

5 speed swap will not move the trans reward or forward. it will come right up in the hole where it belongs , and the only mod you will have to do to the console is to use the 5 speed cover w/ factory boot . #2 you don't have to change the harness for the reverse lights/safety switch , just follow the colors and splice the end that matches the manual trans. I've done several of these swaps , and the only thing you have to watch for is the 1/4 inch bolt that is directly above the steering colom , behind the instrument cluster. EVERYTHING else bolts right in .
