O.K,I changed the head gasket about two weeks ago,had a slight coolant loss but nothing signifigant. Now Ihave a plume of white sweet smelling steam coming out of the exhaust, but only when I sit in traffic or when I accelerate from a stop.The turbo is a high mileage IHI but it still pulls 15 lbs strong to 5500rpm. Is this turbo seals?or could it be the head gasket again? Please help me.Thanks.
It's either the head gasket or a cracked head. Have the ehad magnafluxed, pressure chacked and checked for flatness this time.
The shop said they milled and machined it,I also had a valve job and new valve seals put in. I'LL take it back to the shop and give them a chance to explain. Thanks.
I had a similar problem and I narrowed it down to turbo seals or a head problem. I pulled the turbo off and blocked off all the lines for the turbo(oil/water) and then ran the car. If it still smokes with the turbo off then its a head problem, if it doesnt smoke with the turbo off the you know its probably the turbo. It will be loud and wont run good without the turbo but as long as you can keep it running you will be able to diagnose your problem easier. Make sure to fully block off the water and oil lines or else you'll get smoke from the manifold when the oil or water hits it.
If it is white and smells sweet , it isn't the turbo ....sorry , but I say you have coolant being drawn into the combustion chamber and burning ....not good to keep running it like that either...
I agree with Ashley. I have yet to hear of a confirmed case of a turbo leaking water into the intake tract or the exhaust tract. The coolant chambers in a turbo are cast to be totally isolated from the shaft, bearings and seals.
