At around 90K I put in some Mobil Clean 5000 and a NAPA Gold filter. I used the 5000 stuff because it was cheaper, but I couldn't find anywhere on the bottle that said it was synthetic.. I just figured it had to be to last 5000. Well now I have 91,500 on the car and the oil was getting brown/black. It doesn't normally turn that color, not even after 3,000 miles. Its almost always perfectly clean. I dumped it today and put in some Mobil 1 and a Motorcraft FL 300 filter. Anyone else have any feedback on the "Clean" 5000 stuff?

I'm sure the Clean 5000 is just regular oil with addatives to extend the life to 5000 miles. I suspedt the Mobil 7500 is a syn-blend, while the Mobil 15,000 is the original Mobil 1 with addatives to extend its life. Personally, I would use the Mobil 15,000 & still change it at the 5K mark.

Tony is correct..... the "clean 5000" is just regular dyno oil.

Mobil is just finally being smart and dispelling the 3000 mile oil change, unfortunately they are going to make a few bucks off of it while it lasts, and keep the public dumb about it by claiming it's something special.

Maybe so, but the Clean 5000 has some extra additives(extreme pressure agents) that also lets it pass diesel engine certification. Most of the standard Dino oils can't do that these days, since the EPA mandated the amount of zinc had to be significantly reduced or deleted(to hopefully make the catalytic converters last the 100K mi warrenty period).

I'm using the high milage versions in the wifes Grand Marquis and the old '69 Cobra Jet(both have 107K). The Lightning will be getting it soon, while the Bird is going to get the std 5000 next week.

As far as it or any oil gettig brown/black, Hell it's supposed to.. A good oil will keep the microscopic particles in supension so they can be drained out with the oil. Oil that is staying "clean" is likely sludging up your engine.

i like turbocoupe50s response the best, brown is good. brown isnt the oil going bad, its the oil gathering up crap to carry it out of the motor. if the mobil clean is gettin that stuff out, may want to keep it in it, althought id go with the 15000 mile stuff. its seems the detergent in the mobil clean 5000 is getting sludge out of your motor that the mobil 1 isnt disolving...

Very good point guys, noted. Next oil change I'll flush and put the 5000 back in it and see what happens [Image: smile.gif]

No.. I do it too, just with Mobil 1. I only put about 3000 miles a year, so its the lesser of two evils - either every year or 5,000 miles - whichever comes 1st.
