Full Version: How do I lower my hydrocarbons? (HC)

Tomorrow is my last day to pass emissions, and I'm having a hard time. I finally got my CO low, but my HCs are high. The limit is 220 and I've had 250-350. I just put in 3 gallons of 100 octane and I'm gonna unhook my PCV valve. Any other advice for lowering my HCs so I can pass?
I have a new motor with 2K miles, new plugs and wires, new O2 sensor, and new catylic converter.
I deleted the EGR system, would this cause the problem. My system didn't even work and it passed before.

From doing previous reading on emissions, I know that you shouldn't use high octane gas. Use 87!

High test is not the best way to do it. But if everything else is correct high test won't hurt you.

Have you checked the codes to see if the EEC is seeing something that would cause it to add extra fuel?

What fuel pressure (idle with refernce hose disconnected) are you running. Try dropping it a couple psi if you have an adjustable FPR
If it's more than 39 - 42 and you can't adjust it, consider another regulator, depending on what codes you get.

A fresh oil change may help if your current oil is dirty.

Be sure the car is COMPLETELY warmed up. Drive it for 30 minutes before the test.

Try cutting the timing back to 6-8*

How do you know the EGR didn't work. Jeff or somebody else would have to tell you what effect EGR issues that might have.
Change your oil and filter, connect your PCV, reconnect your EGR (it will make a difference at cruise), and DO NOT use high octane gas, use 87. Finally make sure your car is good and warmed up (idle for at least 20 minutes) before the test.

Good Luck!
