As we go through the process of rebuilding my engine, I thought fellow board members might be interested in this. I like to have my engine parts clean when I reassemble the engine ( I'm kind of anal about this)! A common household cleaner known as Simple Green does a fantastic job of removing carbon deposits. The best part is no scrubbing. Just soak the part overnight and rinse the next morning. The piston on the left is after and the one on the right is before.
Thanks for that tip. I been looking for an easy idea for pistons and such. We have heard the virtues of Simple Green before, such as degreasing. but i didn't know it would do carbon buildup.
Good idea. Just one question I notice the jug in the pic is a concentrate. Do you use it full strength, or do you dilute it.

I use it full strength. Works wonders and its cheap. I think I paid about $8 for this jug at Sam's club.
what is its effect on paints and rubber and plastic?
Doesn't seem to effect them at all. That's what so great about this stuff, something so inert can dissolve tough carbon deposits.

That Stuff is amazing...it was the only thign my mom ever found that could get all the grass stains out of my pants when I was younger..

Simple Green does work great to clean just about everything. I did find out though that it will disolve the chrome off of plated plastic parts such as chrome trim on the door handle pulls.
Luckily I was able to get some replacements from Ford before they were gone.
