Full Version: Update - Finally dropped my tranny...(long)

I got motivated this morning and decided to drop my tranny and see WTF was going on with my clutch and/or fork & TO bearing.

It would have gone easier if the tranny cross member would have come off the tranny but the bolts would not budge (I seem to recall that from last time...).

The good news is that I didn't have to remove the pilot bearing...uh...that's because it had done most of the work on its own. Yep, after I got the bellhousing off I stuck my finger in to the pilot bearing area and came back with...uhmmm...roller bearings on my finger. Oooops !

Pulled off the PP and clutch disk and got a closer look. The pilot bearing had basically been spun into several rings of metal and only the outer wall remained in the crank (that and a few more roller bearings).

I had no way to get the SOB out but to spend the next 1/2 hour with a chisel and hammer until finally I was able to peel the remaining metal from the hole !!! Shit !

As I knew, the fork was sprung and the TO bearing itself was bad.

The Pressure Plate looked good and the clutch disk was is pretty good shape. I would have prefered to change it out...but money prevents it at this time. The flywheel surface was in surprisingly good shape. The tranny spun fine without noise. The input shaft housing had slight scratches but nothing deep and no grooves.

As of now, I have the new pilot bearing, clutch fork, TO bearing, and bellhousing re-installed. Tomorrow I'll put the tranny, driveshaft, exhaust and center console shit back together...and HOPEFULLY I'll have my TC back up and running...with no more shifting problems or noises.

All in all...it could have been much much worse ! However, my back will hate me in the morning !

that sucks man. i guess it could have been a lot worse though. good luck getting it back together.
Glad you found the problem, and that it wasnt too expensive. Any bets on how long it will be until the next problem shows up? [Image: smile.gif]

Since when is statistical probability a physics topic ? Heck, if all TC owners thought that we'd never drive them... [Image: biggrin.gif]

What a PITA time I had getting the tranny back in though ! It's hard enough most times but not being able to remove the cross member from the tranny proved...let's just say...interesting.

But FWIW...I got finished putting it all back together about 15 minutes ago. Started it up, backed out of the garage (that was a good sign LOL !) and it began to pour down rain. WTF, I went for a short spin and everything seems to be in order with the tranny and shifting ! Yiiiipiiiieeeee !

Glad to hear it's fixed.
Great! Now get it to the track and let's see how far you move up the fastest TC list.
