I kept trying to keep the **** thing in place, and once it looked like it was good I tightened everything down, but apparently not, because it was pissing out the front cam tower.. how did I mess this up? I can see it sticking out very slightly from the front. Also, it had a little peg that looked like it sat in that first oil hole, and the old gasket looked like it had two holes on the side of the tower section. I could also just be an idiot that was in a hurry.
Which gasket did you use? Felpro or Motorcraft? The Motorcraft gasket is much better in general, but can still be a pain to get it to seal in the front. Make sure everything is dry before you put the valve cover back on and drop it straight down on top of the gasket. I almost never get it right on the first try. Once you think you've got it, before putting everything else back together you should inspect the over-the-hump part of the gasket to make sure it hasn't moved at all. It's really easy for it to move when you drop the cover back on - especially if it's wet with oil. It definitely takes patience.
+1 on the motorcraft gasket, the one with the steel inside. It is a little pricey but well worth it in my opinion. You'll never to have to buy another one again.
+2 on the Motorcraft gasket, just installed one this week. It was much easier then the last time I did one with a Felpro gasket.
If youre using cork, try some RTV at the front of the gasket. Let dry until it holds, then install. viola!
